A burgeoning science of mind has challenged the simple dichotomies associated with Cartesian dualism. Simple questions have much more complicated responses than a few generations ago. Alternate Futures: A New Christian History
Tom Holland refers to the moral mayhem results when Christian love is cut loose from its theological moorings. One way we might track the development of Christianity is by attending to the many permutations and cataclysmic reverberations that followed in the wake of love’s successive reformulations. God's sovereignty and impassibility, a creation ex nihilo, a severely limited salvation, retributive justice, penal substitutionary atonement-- these and other innovations might be construed as both symptoms of and catalysts to an ongoing reconstruction of the original meaning of the Love of God. What were the critical moments of contested orthodoxies, and what alternative futures lie concealed in the historical record of Christianity's evolution? And how might we connect the many marginalized early orthodoxies with the resurgent sensibilities of 21st century Christianity?
